MG & Artillery Optical Aiming Circle Sight
This is a rare Richtkreis 31 Aiming Circle optical sight, which was used for both artillery and fixed mounted machine guns to measure horizontal and vertical angles in preparation of indirect fire. The sight would have been fitted to a standard German army tripod. The sight is in two parts, the aiming circle and the periscope, which was fitted by means of of a dovetail slide. This allowed the user to raise the line of sight. This example is in excellent condition the aiming circle periscope both come with their original leather cases. The aiming circle is maker marked ( Hildebrand -Wichmann-Werke Freigberg-SA ). The letters "SA" indicates that this actual sight was Finish army contract made item. The leather case for the aiming circle is stamped with a very faint waffenampt and a 1940 date. The periscope is maker marked "ddx" ( Voigtlander & Sohn AG ), it's leather case is dated 1937 and waffenampt marked.
