The unit was formed in the spring of 1942 as part of the German 162nd Infantry Division and was also known as the "Turkoman Divsion" It saw extensive action in Yugoslavia and Italy. This example is the 1st pattern shield with a further two patterns being introduced later in the war. This pattern shield depicts a mosque with a centre couploa in white and blue with two side spirals and a large gate. At the bottom it has the inscription "TURKISTAN" and the inscription above the mosque "BIZ ALLA BILEN" is Turkish for "We Believe in God".
