It became available as the Model M1921 to the civilian market. It became notorious during the U.S. Prohibition era as the signature weapon of various organised crime syndicates during the 1920's. The U.S. Marine Corps officially adopted the weapon for use within the Banana wars in central America and the Caribbean ( 1898 to 1934 ). It was also used by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI. The U.S. Army officially adopted the M1928A1 in the late 1930's and remained in production, with very slight changes to 1942, when the M1 was introduced as a war measure to on production time.
