German Gas Mask Canister

This is a tan painted gas mask canister which had been painted twice before in its service life. The original finish was dark green and is visible on the inside of the lid. The second coat appears to be battleship grey indicating Kreigsmarine issue. The final paint scheme is tan which indicates Mediteranean or Italy. The canister is missing one of the upper strap loops. The base of the canister is stamped with the letter 'D" which means the canister is watertight. This pattern of gas mask canister was introduced in late 1942. Besides the missing strap loop the canister is in very good condition.
