However it was not accepted in the Imperial German Army. The pistol did become popular as commercial item and was brought as a private purchase pistol by many military officers from around the world including German officers. It was supplied to Italy, Russia and Turkey. Even the former British Prime Minsiter 'Sir Winston Churchill" brought one when he was a serving officer in the British army during the 1890's. The C96 wad manufactured under licence by China and Spain. This example is maker marked Mauser Oberndorf. For Non EU Sales Only. However it can be re-deactivated to the current EU specification.
