A wooden handle British army jack knife which was issued to a member of the Royal Navy Reserve Hood Battalion. The Hood Battalion was a Royal Navy Division raised at the beginning of WW1 and was made up of officers and men of the Naval Volunteer Reserve. It's father was Winston Churchill, then the first lord of the admiralty, The Prime Minister of the day Mr Asquith christened it as "Winston little army'. It was quite unlike any other formation as the soldiers within the battalion adhered to all the traditions and practices of the Royal Navy, or in other words, sailors who went to war as soldiers. The Hood battalion also attracted numerous officers of the highest calibre, which included the Prime Ministers son, Raymond Asquith, who was killed in September 1916, Patrick Shaw-Stewart, said to be the most brilliant young man of his generation, Bernard Freyburg and the most famous of all, the poet Rupert Brooke who was to die tragically in a foreign field. The Hood battalion. saw some of the fiercest fighting of the First World War, particularly at Antwerp and Gallipoli. It also saw acton on the Western front at the Ancre at Gavrelle and Passchendaele.
