U.S. Flak Vest. ( British Made )

During the early stages of the American air assault over Germany it was reported that 70% of mortal wounds received by U.S. bomber crews was caused by low-velocity projectiles such a flak shrapnel. Resulting in need and development of the flak vest in October 1942. The first flak vests where produced by the British firm Wilkinson Sword Company. It consists of a Khaki canvas vest lined with overlapping steel plates to allow flexibility and protection. The central red rip-cord instantly jettisoned the heavy 25 pound vest. However British production proved to be to slow for U.S. needs resulting with the U.S. mass producing their home made vests in October 1943. By January 1944, there was enough vests available to equip the entire U.S. Heavy bombardment wing in the European Theatre. This is the rarer British made example which is in very good condition and has been personalised with the original owners service number. Normally British made examples would have a Broad arrow stamp. However this example does not have a visible broad arrow stamp. British made examples are always Khaki in colour where U.S.made examples are green.
