U.S. Flak Vest.
During the early stages of the American air assault over Germany, it was reported that 70% of mortal wounds received by bomber crews was caused by low-velocity projectiles such as flak shrapnel. Resulting in the need and development of the flak vest in October 1942. The first flak vests where first produced by the British firm 'Wilkinson Sword Company". It consisted of a Khaki coloured canvas lined with overlapping steel plates to allow flexibility and protection. The central red rip-cord instantly jettisoned the heavy 25 pound vest. However the British production proved to slow for U.S. needs resulting in the mass-production of U.S. home made flak vests in October 1943. By January 1944 there was enough vests available to equip the entire U.S. heavy bombardment wing. This example is in unissued condition and differs from the rarer British made examples which are Khaki in colour with a red rip-cord, U.S. Made vests are green in colour. This example also retains its contract label which gives the makers name Breslee Manufacturing Company. It is also marked with the flaming bomb ordnance acceptance stamp.
