German Kleiner Granatenwerfer G.R.W.16 Wooden Box

This is a wooden storage mortar grenade box for the Kleiner Granatenwerfer which was a light Spigot type trench mortar. It was given the nick names "Priesterwerfer" Priest Launcher and "Kleiner Priester " Little Priest. The wooden box would have contained 10 Mortar Grenades. This example retains its original stencilling and is dated 1915. The base of the box had completely rotten away and has been replaced with ply. It had suffered with wood worm. However this has been treated. The original label has come way from the lid however it is still included. The box was captured by a French Artillery Officer which he has written his name, rank and unit and postal address. Sous-Lieutenant A.Rollin, 5 Group, 117 R.A.L. Sect.P.146.
